Duval, Alexia.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello my name is Alexia Duval I am eighteen years old and a senior at Southeast Career Technical Academy. I am adopted and the only child to Heather and David Duval. We love to go camping in our motorhome with our four dogs. When I’m not with my family or at school I’m in the pool practicing for swim meets. This fall I plan on co-enrolling at UNLV and CSN in the college of science getting my bachelors in biology in hopes of getting into Veterinary school of Medicine.

I interned at Greatful Pet Animal Clinic and shadowed the owner and main doctor, Dr. Bill Flannery. When I walked in the front desk would say hi to me then I would walk to the back. The back is where they do most of their work and surgery. This area was pretty much always hectic and fast moving. They had three work tables, two surgery tables, one surgery room, two kennel rooms and plenty of open space for any animal to have room and feel comfortable. Everything had a place and was organized. I chose to intern here because I have planned to become a vet for a long time. It was good experience to come in and see what it’s like in action, I also learned about owning your own clinic one day which I hope to do.

Sports Medicine

My name is Samantha Elliott, I am 17 years old, and I am a senior in Sports Medicine at Southeast Career and Technical Academy. I have been on the varsity soccer team since my freshman year and I was captain my junior and senior year. I have been in student council since freshman year holding a variety of positions including executive officer, secretary, president, and student body vice president of publicity. I have been a member of Ambassadors since my sophomore year and HOSA for one year. I have been a commissioner of the City of Henderson Blue Ribbon Commision since my sophomore year and this year I held the position of Co-Chair of the committee. I also have been working for the City of Henderson at Valley View Recreation Center at a Recreational Assistant for almost two years. Lastly, this year I had an internship at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine/Sports Plus Physical Therapy where I got to shadow orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, and physical therapists. This fall I plan on continuing my academic and athletic career at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri.

I had my internship at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine/Sports Plus Physical Therapy. I got to shadow orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, and physical therapists. I chose this site because I didn’t want to go to a highschool and personally, I figured I would learn more at an orthopedic office.

Sports Medicine

I’ve lived in Vegas my whole life and my family lives here as well. While I was growing up here I enjoyed playing outside and hanging out with family. There’s a lot of cops on my dad’s side of the family and that is part of what made me want to pursue that field. In the fall of 2020 I am planning to join the explorer program to find out if law enforcement is the field I really want to join. If that is the route I decide to take I am planning on being a security guard or dispatcher until I turn 21 and can go through the police academy.

For the duration of my internship I was at Coronado. I chose Coronado because I was okay with wherever I was placed and didn’t really have a preference on what I would be doing. While there, their athletic trainer Derek Jensen was my mentor. During my internship I was able to oversee both the fall and winter sports. Many of the tasks I did consisted of fitting players for equipment such as helmets and taping up injured players. I also saw during my time there that it isn’t always about dealing with athletes, sometimes you have to be able to communicate with the athletes parents as well.

Hernandez, Destiny.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hi! My name is Destiny Hernandez and I am a Sports Medicine major here at Southeast Tech. I love learning about sports injuries, how they happen and how to properly treat them. I’ve played volleyball all 4 years of high school and it was overall a great experience! My plans for the fall of 2020 are to attend CSN and study Dental Hygiene. My internship site was Eldorado High School and I chose a high school because I was more familiar with high school sports and injuries that happen at that level.

Ireland, Haley.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello, my name is Haley Ireland and I am eighteen years old. I go to SouthEast Tech and major in Sports Medicine. I am the only child of my parents Taffie and James Wellcome.  We love to go to the river to camp and cruise on our boat. When we aren’t near the water we spend a lot of  time with friends and family. In the fall of 2020, I will be attending Arizona State University to study Kinesiology in hopes to pursue a career in the sports medicine field as a physical therapist.

I interned at Sean Early Physical Therapy and shadowed Sean Early himself. The atmosphere is very friendly and clean. When you walk in everyone says hi and they know you by your name, even the patients know who you are. In the clinic there are multiple mirrors to motivate you and lots of equipment including a stationary bike, shuttle, and restrictive ropes that help patients gain back mobility and strength. I chose this site to complete my internship to learn what it’s like to be a physical therapist, own your own clinic, and  the techniques used to help different patients.

Knowles, Natylie.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello, my name is Natylie Knowles and I’m a senior in Sports Medicine at Southeast Career and Technical Academy. I was beyond lucky to get the chance to work with a real highschool athletic trainer, Chelsea Hanes, at Foothill Highschool in Henderson, Nevada. One of the main reasons I chose this site to intern at was because it was close to my house and I had always wondered what it would be like to see different injuries from sports we currently don’t offer at my high school. I had been provided with an amazing mentor, she has become a person I look up to and I can’t thank her enough for all of the help and support she provided me with. Miss Chelsea is caring, hard-working, and charismatic. She’s always ready to help and get the job done. I’ve loved my four years at SECTA and I’m proud to announce I will be continuing my path of sports medicine at the University of Michigan in the fall!

Larson, Joshua.jpg

Sports Medicine

My name is Joshua Larson and I attended SECTA for all four years of high school in the sports med program.  I grew up in Boulder City and always knew I wanted a career in the medical field. My plan for the future is to be a Firefighter/EMT, so I will attend CSN to get my EMT certifications in the fall. Over this past school year, we had the privilege of attending an internship of our choice. I observed the Athletic trainer at Boulder City High School and gained a lot of hands-on experience that will benefit me in my future career.

Zepeda, Jesse.jpg

Sports Medicine

My name is Jesse Zepeda I am a senior in SECTA and my major is sports medicine. I’m interested in my major because it would further help me down the road in my future plans . My plan for the fall is to go to CSN and to be a paramedic then later on a firefighter. My major will help me achieve my goal because it helps me understand what to do when you are the first responder when someone gets hurt. Along with helping me diagnose them and treating them in that moment when they get hurt.

Harris, Johnathan.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello! My name is Johnathan Harris a senior student enrolled in the major of Sports Medicine at Southeast Tech. Some of the hobbies I enjoyed include playing sports and spending time with family and friends. I plan to attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in the fall of 2020 to pursue a Nursing degree.

This year for Sports Medicine I was able to have the privilege of being an intern for the Athletic Trainer at Foothill High School. I originally chose the site because it was close to home and I knew a lot of people on that campus. While there I was able to learn a lot and perform a lot of hands on skills like taping and some first aid. The overall experience was amazing and I am grateful to have had the opportunity.

Oviedo, Kevin.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hi there! My name is Kevin Oviedo as of today I’m 17 years old (not for long). I really enjoy listening to music, running and watching movies. Something interesting that I found out because of Sports Medicine, is that I have knocked knees! Basically this means my knees bend inward a bit when I stand. I’m currently enrolled in CSN and I am already on track to start classes this summer and some more in the fall.

My internship site was Desert Pines High School, also known as DP. DP is like any other public high school and even shares a similar layout. The reason I chose DP was because it was fairly close to me, it was around a 15 minute drive compared to the 30 minute drive to SECTA.

Perez, Geo.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello my name is Geo Perez. I am currently a student that attends Southeast career and technical academy for the sports medicine program. I started this back in I believe was 2016. Now when I first started I wasn't too sure what to expect from sports medicine but I learned there that I would like to be a physical therapist. My time has allowed me to learn so many new things and has allowed me to pick up some new goals and interests. Now I have the desire to be a sports psychologist and maybe hopefully one day be a soccer manager. That brings me to tell you a little bit about me. As you can see I love soccer, it is probably my biggest passion. However, I do enjoy playing chess and reading about how to run a business. I was at Tru physical therapy this school year as part of the sports medicine program. There I got to observe some patients and to a certain extent learned how to diagnose patients. I also got to observe how a physical therapy office is run. Now I came upon this internship because of Ms.Forshee. You see, I had some trouble trying to find an internship so I had to call for some help. In other words I did not find my internship by myself. Once being there though I can wholeheartedly say that I don’t think that I can imagine myself at any other place due to the atmosphere and the way things are there. Now for fall I how to go to college by either attending UNLV or CSN. I would also like to start on my other goal of being a soccer manager so I would probably look for a way to start that via class or anything.

Robledo, Itzel.jpg

Sports Medicine

Hello, my name is Itzel Robledo. I am 18 years old and my major at Southeast TECH is Sports Medicine. At SECTA, I was able to partake in sports, clubs, along with being the dance team. My overall adventure at SECTA is something I’ll never forget; I've made many incredible memories here. My plan for the future is to attend UNLV to study Kinesiological Sciences to obtain a career in the medical field.

The internship site I was given the opportunity to work at was at Las Vegas High School. The reason why I picked the site was that I was familiar with the school and I was interested in how well the athletes played sports. I’m appreciative of getting the opportunity to be at this site and to experience what it's like to be an athletic trainer!

Sordo, Samuel.jpg

Sports Medicine

My life up till now has been learning and changes. I grew up in a home where I was taught to always push myself to be the best I can be. Going to SECTA high school has really shown me why my parents tried so hard to make my life easy. In the fall of 2020 I plan to go to CSN for a biology major. The only problem is that I only plan to stay here in Vegas for one more because I want to move to Pennsylvania so that I can go to my dream school, Temple university.  My internship site was at Basic high school, me and my mentors had this run down room where you couldn't even see the door. The reason I chose this site was because It was close to home, and at the time my class and I started internship I had football practice At basic high school, so it made it easier for me to get my hours in after practice.
